our mission is to “Feed the hungry and warm
the abandoned!” Our operation is entirely-volunteer-based

toiletries and other daily necessities to more than
180,000
less fortunate people in Hong Kong, China and other developing
countries.
Since 2012, we have a special focus
on helping underprivileged children who suffer from congenital
heart disease in Mainland China.
100% of the funds raised
for this program will be used to subsidize the cost of surgery
for these children (i.e. 0% will be
used for the administration costs of Sunshine Action).

Incidence, Morbidity & Mortality
-
Congenital heart defects are
every country’s #1 birth defect. Nearly one
of every 100 babies is born with a CHD.
-
Congenital heart defects are the #1
cause of birth defect related deaths.
-
Each year over 1,000,000 babies are born
worldwide with a congenital heart defect.
100,000 of them will not live to see their
first birthday and thousands more die before
they reach adulthood.
Lifelong Disease
-
Almost half all children and adults with
complex congenital heart disease have
neurological and developmental disabilities.
-
For the first time, more than 50% of the
CHD survivors are adults.
-
10% of all CHD cases evaluated in an
Adult CHD clinic are first diagnosed in
adulthood.

patients of CHD in Mae Sot, Thailand - July 2014
General CHD FACTS
-
More than 50% of all children
born with congenital heart defect will
require at least one invasive surgery in
their lifetime.
-
There are more than 40 different types
of congenital heart defects. Little is known
about the cause of most of them. There is no
known prevention or cure for any of them.

Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) is a defect in
the structure of the heart and great vessels which is present at
birth. Many types of heart defects exist, most of which either
obstruct blood flow in the heart or vessels near it, or cause
blood to flow through the heart in an abnormal pattern. Other
defects, such as long QT syndrome, affect the heart's rhythm.
Heart defects are among the most common birth defects and are
the leading cause of birth defect-related deaths. Approximately
9 people in 1000 are born with a congenital heart defect. Some
complex congenital heart defects require medication or surgery.
|
|
Most of the time CHD is serious and requires surgery and/or
medications. Medications include diuretics, which aid the body
in eliminating water, salts, etc... for strengthening the
contraction of the heart. This slows the heartbeat and removes
some fluid from tissues. Some defects require surgical
procedures to restore circulation back to normal and in some
cases, multiple surgeries are needed. Interventional cardiology
now offers patients minimally invasive alternatives to surgery.
Mu Lar Kway
is a 14-year-old-girl who came to SUNSHINE ACTION
with a congenital cardiac disease known as
Tetralogy of
Fallot (TOF). TOF accounts for about 10%
of congenital heart diseases and is characterized by a
ventricular septal defect, or a hole in the muscle wall
that separates the two lower chambers of the heart. This
hole allows oxygen-rich blood to mix with oxygen-poor
blood, and results in a decreased efficiency of the
heart. The blood picks up less oxygen from the lungs,
and oxygen-poor blood circulates through the body.
Because Mu Law Kyaw's blood supply is deficient in
oxygen, her skin, lips and fingernails have a blue tint.
Due to her condition, the simplest tasks, including the
20 minute walk to school exhausts her. Her condition has
also stunted her growth, giving her the appearance of
looking much younger.
Mu Lar Kway
lives in Burma with her brother, parents and niece. She
attends grade 5 in her local school. She enjoys going to
school but often has to miss class because of extreme
fatigue. Her parents are paddy farmers earning around
USD $200 a month. After education and food costs her
family are not able to put any money away for savings.

Kyaw Linn Naing
is 15-years-old. He was referred to
Sunshine Action with a congenital
heart disease known as
Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD). RHD is
the most common acquired heart disease in children in
many countries of the world, especially in developing
countries such as Burma. Kyaw Linn Naing was first
diagnosed at 11-years-old and experienced heart
palpitations, difficulty breathing and cyanosis. He also
could not walk for longer than 10 minutes at a time.
Kyaw Linn Naing lives with his parents, siblings and
grandmother in Burma. His parents are vegetable growers
and say Kway Linn Naing's medical treatment is very
expensive in Burma and costs more than they can ever
afford.
Under BCMF's
care, Kyaw Linn Naing received life saving surgery last
March. He has since made a full recovery and is looking
forward to returning to school very shortly.
His family are very grateful to BCMF and his
doctors who helped him. He said when he is older he
would like to be a doctor and give other people the gift
of good health.
