SUNSHINE ACTION耀陽行動

PLANT the PLANET 植樹愛地球‏

「今天有人坐在樹蔭下,是因為有人在很久前種了樹」

If each of us use the quantity of paper, wood products & furniture equivalent to 3 trees per year,

how many trees you need to plant back to EARTH in Life?

In 2010, SUNSHINE ACTION ltd ~耀陽行動 started 'Plant the Planet' Program which will plant SUNSHINE-Trees in every country the Sunshine Action volunteers will visit.

Sunshine Action planted 322'295 Trees, Plants, Fruit Trees & Flowers in Hong Kong, Kenya, China, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Thailand, Nepal...

According to UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM:

  • An area of a rainforest the size of a football field is being destroyed each second.

Tropical forests cover 23% of the Earth's land surface, but they are disappearing at a rate of 4.6 millions hectares a year. Asia leads loses with 2.2 millions hectares a year, Latin America & the Caribbean together lose 1.9 millions and Africa loses 470'000 hectares of rain forest every year.

  • More than 5'000 things are made from trees such as houses, furniture, pencils, utensils, fences, books, newspapers, movie tickets even clothing & toothpaste.

  • 1. A single mature tree can absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of 22.7 kg/year (48 lbs) and release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support 2 human beings....
    2. One acre of trees annually consumes the amount of carbon dioxide equivalent to that produced by driving an average car for 41,483km (26,000 miles). That same acre of trees also produces enough oxygen for 18 people to breathe for a year.

    3. A 100-ft tree, 18" diameter at its base, produces 2721.5kg (6000lbs) of oxygen.

  • Three-quarters of the world's people rely on wood as their main source of energy.

  • Destruction of forests creates numerous environmental catastrophes, including altering local rainfall patterns, accelerating soil erosion, causing the flooding of rivers, and threatening millions of species of plants, animals and insects with extinction.

TOP 10 DEFORESTING NATIONS : measured in acres of forest lost per year.

- Brazil : over 7'500'000 acres
- Indonesia: over 4'500'000 acres
- Sudan: over 1'400'000 acres
- Myanmar: over 1'100'000 acres
- Tanzania: over 1'000'000 acres
- Nigeria: over 1'000'000 acres
-Zambia: over 1'000'000 acres
-Congo: over    700'000 acres
-Zimbabwe: over    700'000 acres
-Venezuela: over    700'000 acres

  • On average, each American uses more than 600 pounds of paper and almost 200 board feet of timber per year.

Heat from Earth is trapped in the atmosphere due to high levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other heat-trapping gases that prohibit it from releasing heat into space -- creating a phenomenon known as the "greenhouse effect."

TREES ABSORB CARBON DIOXIDE (ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT GREEN HOUSE GASSES)
FROM THE ATMOSPHERE AND CONVERT IT INTO OXYGEN THROUGH PHOTOSYNTHESIS

  • Trees also reduce the greenhouse effect by shading our homes and office buildings. This reduces air conditioning needs up to 30%.

  • Planting trees remains one of the cheapest, most effective means of drawing excess CO2 from the atmosphere.

  • A 100-ft tree, 18" diameter at its base, produces 2721.5kg (6000lbs) of oxygen.

A single mature tree can absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of 48 lbs./year and release enough oxygen back into the atmosphere to support 2 human beings.

Reduction on some Air Pollutants: Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)- Coal burning for electricity/home heating ; Ozone (O3) -  is a naturally occurring oxidant, existing in the upper atmosphere ; Nitrogen oxides - Automotive exhaust is probably the largest producer of NOx ; Particulates are small (<10 microns) particles emitted in smoke from burning fuel.

Trees reduce topsoil erosion, prevent harmful land pollutant contained in the soil from into our waterways, slow down water run-off, and ensure that our groundwater suppliers are continually being replenished.

The fact that trees help combat global warming might not seem like breaking news, but scientists have determined that plants emit gasses in warm weather to help keep the Earth cool. These gasses stick to aerosol particles, helping to reflect sunlight and form clouds. The effectiveness of these emissions is dependent on region, and goes down dramatically in urban areas, where the amount of manmade aerosol particles is very high when compared to biological particles.

Arbor Day - 植樹節, a day to plant trees and raise awareness about deforestation, which consumes about 60,000 square kilometers of forest every year. There are many organizations, and even some cities, that give out free trees to increase participation. Over 10 million trees are planted every Arbor Day to assist with conservation and reforestation efforts. Go out there and get your hands dirty today!

Arbor Day (from the Latin arbor, meaning tree) is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. It originated in Nebraska City, Nebraska, United States by J. Sterling Morton. The first Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872 and an estimated one million trees were planted that day. Many countries now observe a similar holiday. Though usually observed in the spring, the date varies, depending on climate and suitable planting season.
